Some animal professionals felt all of Michael Vick’s dogs should have been destroyed due to their lack of social skills and aggressive behavior. But a couple of animal groups stepped up and took the dogs in and worked with them. They knew it was going to be difficult but they felt the dogs deserved a chance at rehabilitation.
It is hard to imagine that any good came from the Michael Vick tragedy but believe it or not there is. Prior to this heart breaking story hitting the national news most Americans had a negative view of the Pit Bull breed. We blamed the breed instead of the ignorant owners. Pit bulls actually perform higher than average when it comes to temperament tests. Human aggression is not a problem associated with the pit bull.
Unfortunately, certain traits have been emphasized into the breed’s character. This is the natural aggression pit bulls have against other dogs. The urge to fight has been breed into pit bulls in the same way running has been breed into greyhounds.
That doesn’t mean that with proper training begun in the early development stages cannot result in a pit bull that can comfortably coexist with other pets including dogs.
